Design for Social Diversity

This research explores the physical context of socially diverse neighborhoods. Together with Sungduck Lee, an architect and faculty at Iowa State, we updated the 2008 book Design for Diversity: Exploring Socially Mixed Neighborhoods (the new edition has the better title Design for Social Diversity).

The book explores the physical context of social diversity. How is social mix sustained or undermined by the built environment? How does design affect social connection? Or safety and privacy? We propose some ideas and guidelines about how to design the built environment in a way that enables social mix, fosters connection, and provides a sense of security.
